A Naturopath’s Guide to Safely Quitting Birth Control

If you are considering coming off the pill, I am here to provide you with all the essential information you need. Understanding how the pill works, recognizing common post-pill symptoms, and exploring supplement recommendations to support your hormone balance are all crucial aspects to consider.

How Oral Contraceptives Work

Oral contraceptive pills (OCP) come in two types: the combined pill, containing synthetic forms of both estrogen and progesterone, and the "mini pill," which contains only synthetic progesterone.

By providing the body with synthetic hormones, the communication between the brain and ovaries is interrupted, preventing ovulation. However, it is important to note that these synthetic hormones have far-reaching effects beyond fertility, impacting bone density, blood clotting, brain function, mood, hair growth, metabolism, and blood pressure maintenance.

While they prevent ovulation, they can also lead to issues such as high blood pressure, hair loss, anxiety, and depression.

The Pill's Impact and Masking of Symptoms

It is crucial to recognize that the pill is prescribed for various reasons, from contraception to addressing hormonal-related symptoms like acne, irregular cycles, or heavy bleeding. However, it is essential to understand that the pill does not address the root cause of these issues; instead, it merely masks the symptoms while you are taking it.

Transitioning Off the Pill

When you decide to discontinue the pill, your body is likely to revert to its pre-pill state, potentially presenting the same symptoms that led you to take the pill initially, as well as some unexpected ones. Here are common post-pill symptoms you might experience during this transition:

  • Post-Pill Amenorrhea

Your body needs time to begin producing its natural hormones again, which can lead to a temporary absence of periods. The herb Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste tree berry) may be helpful in this situation.

  • Post-Pill Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

As natural hormones find their balance, there may be a rise in androgens, causing symptoms akin to PCOS, such as irregular cycles, anovulation, excessive hair growth, and acne.

  • Post-Pill Acne

After stopping the pill, the rise in androgens can trigger acne due to increased sebum production. Zinc can be beneficial in managing post-pill acne.

  • Post-Pill Infertility

The pill's synthetic hormones may disrupt the communication between the brain and ovaries, causing a delay in ovulation and hormone production. Be patient with your body and consider a preconception plan if trying to conceive.

Supplements for Transitioning Off the Pill

To aid in a smoother transition, consider the following supplements:

  • Zinc: Helps reduce androgens, balances sebum, and is anti-inflammatory for the skin.

  • Vitamin A: Supports skin cell turnover.

  • B Vitamins & Magnesium: Helps replenish nutrients depleted by the pill, crucial for energy and mood.

  • Paeonia & Licorice: Synergistically restore ovulation and reduce testosterone levels.

  • Chaste Tree: Supports communication between the brain and ovaries, facilitating natural hormone production.

  • Saw Palmetto: Aids in reducing PCOS-like symptoms and regulating the menstrual cycle.

It is advisable to start supplementation of B vitamins and zinc four weeks before discontinuing the pill to potentially minimize the severity of post-pill symptoms.

Additional Suggestions

In addition to supplements, consider incorporating the following into your routine:

  • Follow a Whole-Foods Diet: Focus on building good gut health by limiting processed foods, alcohol, and refined sugars. Consider removing dairy if prone to acne. Prioritize high-quality proteins, fresh fruits, a mix of raw and cooked vegetables, and healthy fats.

  • Gut Healing Extras: Include bone broths, gelatin, sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and miso in your diet.

  • Bitter Foods: Promote detoxification with foods like rocket, radicchio, kale, green tea, and apple cider vinegar.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink filtered water.

  • Consider a BALANCE Supplement: Look for supplements containing herbs to support a regular cycle.

Other Contraception Methods

If you're discontinuing hormonal contraception, consider other methods such as condoms and the fertility awareness method.

Seeking Support

For those with severe hormonal imbalance symptoms before starting the pill, consider consulting with a qualified practitioner to minimize potential flare-ups or symptom returns during the transition.

Disclaimer

Always work with a qualified practitioner when making changes to medication, using supplements, and exploring herbal medicine.

Remember, your health and well-being are of the utmost importance, so be sure to approach any changes with care and attention.

FAQs

  • To reduce post-pill side effects it is important that you first optimise gut health and liver functioning for at least 30 days before quitting. After that, you can have the removal of the Implanon, IUD device, or cease taking the pill or depo shot. For many of my patients, I will continue the detox and food plan for 3 months as their body rebalances their hormonal profile.

  • If you were put on birth control to treat acne, PCOS, heavy clotty periods, irregular periods, or any other health concern then there is always a chance of it coming back because birth control has been hiding the underlying hormonal imbalance.

I suggest extending the 10-day detox to at least 4 weeks if this is the case.

  • Yes. Quitting birth control means that your body will begin to ovulate at any time, making you fertile.

  • Every woman is unique and will depend on why she was put on birth control in the first place, stress levels, environmental surroundings, and nutritional status.

To have a regular, ovulatory period it may take 1 month to 12 months.
